London provides the most opportunities for female workers in the tech sector, according to technology recruitment company Mortimer Spinks.
The research, which surveyed over 3,700 workers across the UK, showed that 40 per cent of the country’s female tech workers are employed in the city.
Opportunities
London was also found to be the best location in the UK for women to build up a business, and women in the city are 2.5 times more likely to work for a tech start-up company than those in other areas of the UK.
Women in London are also being provided with better opportunities, with nearly a third of tech companies in the city saying that they have introduced formal initiatives to employ more women, compared to less than a quarter of companies in the rest of the UK.
However, research from Tech London Advocates showed that there is still more that needs to be done in the city to get more women working in the tech sector. One in ten tech companies in London were found to have no female workers, whilst over half said that less than 15 per cent of their teams have female workers.
Vital
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan stated that whilst the tech sector is “flourishing”, it is “vital” that more females are encouraged to work in digital and tech in order to reverse the underrepresentation of women in the industry.
The research from Mortimer Spinks coincides with London Technology Week, which Tech London Advocates Founder Russ Shaw described as “an opportunity to celebrate the opportunities technology companies hold for all Londoners, cutting across age, gender, ethnicity and background.”
