List reveals UK's fastest growing women-run businesses

A list released by the Centre for Entrepreneurs has highlighted the UK’s fastest growing women-led companies.

The Centre for Entrepreneurs report states that Britain is “without a doubt” one of the world’s best countries for women in business. Their recent Fortuna 50 index aims to draw attention to the quality of British businesses that are run by women.

The index was compiled using annual revenue growth over the last three years from Companies House data. Each small firm listed had women as founding directors, reached a turnover between £100 thousand and £5 million, and have saw positive growth in each of the three years.

One of the report’s purposes is to inspire other women to start their own businesses. This would tie in well with government schemes to boost startups in the UK, in particular, those created by women.

Speaking of the Fortuna 50 index, Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Fortuna 50 showcases the great variety of businesses that are run by women in the UK, inspiring others to do the same, and we are determined to do everything we can to help even more women with great entrepreneurial ideas turn their vision into reality.”

A recent report highlighted that the British economy and the jobs market would benefit from an increase in women entrepreneurs. It suggested that, despite a number of positive steps being taken, more should be done if the government wishes to commit to diversifying enterprise ownership.

“Entrepreneurial activity is undoubtedly rising in popularity, and the Fortuna 50 index shows the breadth of sectors experiencing growth and job creation across the UK,” said Matt Smith, director of the Centre for Entrepreneurs.

“These women are inspirational role models who will surely encourage a greater number of people to start and grow a business.”
